fynbos reserve
nature retreat
The Paranomus Sceptrum-Gustaviensis proves the argument that too frequent fires in fynbos can result in local species extinction. This "Sceptre" will only start flowering when it is eight years old. Any fire with an interval of less than that after the previous fire will prevent the creation of a new generation. A few pockets of this plant remain in the reserve. The Protea Compacta, Susannae and Obtusifolia show how species are adapted to soil-types: the first growing on acid sand, the second on neutral sand and the last on limestone. The Protea repens is a baboon favorite. They trash the nectar filled flowers of these shrubs. The Protea aspera and P. longifolia are listed as "vulnerable".
