fynbos reserve
nature retreat
It is a bit of a disgrace to only picture three species of the Restio family since the Restios, next to the Proteas and the Ericas, make up the third major group of plants typical for fynbos. Though large stands of Restios make a very attractive picture, due to the lack of colourful flowers a single plant looks quite dull. All of the Restios have reed-like leaves; male and female flowers are on separate plants. Some Restio species are used for thatching, a trade in which the people of nearby Elim are traditionally experts. All the species of the Rutacea family are fynbos species. The leaves of Agathosma ("Buchu") and less so of Diosma species smell deliciously.
