The common name of the Leonotis leonorus is Wild dagga, though as we understand it cannot compare with the real dagga. According to folklore other useful qualities of the Wild dagga are that the leaves of the plant would help against snake bites and that planting Wild dagga around the house keeps snakes away (which would result in a certain rodent infestation). The fruit of the Carpobrotus edulis (Sour fig) is edible and used to make tasty jams. Horses are partial to the fruits as well. The Sour fig can cover vast tracts of disturbed lands in no time. Since this "fig" makes dense ground cover with their succulent leaves, it is used in the reserve to create fire breaks around buildings.
