The Drosera species ("Sundews") are carnivorous plants that trap and digest small insects with their sticky leaves to compensate for the lack of nutrients in the soil. Fabaceae (Pea family) species, such as the Aspalathus, are essential for fynbos growing on nitrogen-poor soils through their nitrogen fixing capabilities. Bacteria in the roots of the plants take nitrogen out of the air and turn it into a nitrate supply for the host plant. The Pelargoniums from the Western Cape of South Africa are the ascendants of all "Geranium" cultivars which can be found all over the world as ornamental plants.
