fynbos reserve
nature retreat
Fynbos is not all about plants. Fynbos is an essential habitat for animals and birds. Some animals depend solely on fynbos. The habitat of the Grysbokkie, a small antelope, is restricted to fynbos. The Sugarbird (amongst numerous other bird species) is a fynbos species as well. This bird with an outrageous long tail feeds mainly on Proteas. The threatened Black harrier will only select a pristine fynbos site for its nest and is endemic to Southern Africa. Only a few hundred nesting couples of this very beautiful bird are left. Several tortoise, amphibian and reptile species only occur in fynbos, such as the Parrot beaked tortoise, the Rose´s toad and the small Southern adder, an Overberg endemic.
