The Fabaceae (Pea, Legume, Bean or Pulse family) is the third largest family of flowering plants (after the Orchid and the Daisy family) with a huge number of species occurring in fynbos. Through their nitrogen fixing capabilities, Fabacea species are essential for fynbos growing on nitrogen poor soils. Bacteria in the roots of the plants take nitrogen out of the air and turn it into a nitrate supply for the host plant. The Pelargoniums from the Western Cape of South Africa are the ascendants of all "Geranium" cultivars which can be found all over the world as ornamental plants. Liparia Splendens and Otholobium rotundifolium are listed as "vulnerable" and Xipotheca reflexa is listed as "endangered".
