fynbos reserve
nature retreat
More than thirty Erica ("heath") species occur in the reserve. We can only picture twenty of them. Some are small and inconspicuous and can hardly be noticed within the surrounding vegetation, others can be seen from afar. The flowers of the Erica fascicularis stick out and wave over the surrounding field. Whatever the habitat, be it dry sun-baked scree slopes, deep sands, marshes or stream banks, you will always find one or more Erica species. And where you see Ericas, you will see the sunbirds, feeding off the nectar of the flowers with their specialized beaks and nervously hopping from plant to plant. Ericas like the Overberg; there are over 200 Erica species in this region.
