fynbos reserve
nature retreat
The Drosera species ("Sundews") are carnivorous plants that trap and digest small insects with their sticky leaves to compensate for the lack of nutrients in the soil. The tentacles on the leaves make the leaves look almost more spectacular than the flowers. The only two real trees on this website are pictured on this page, the Rooiels (Cunonia capensis) and the Bladdernut (Dyospyros whyteana). Technically trees do not occur in fynbos, but down in the "kloofs" (canyons) fynbos neatly gives way to forest which is immune against the regular fynbos fires so that trees (over 20 real tree species occur in the reserve in suitable habitats) can grow huge and ancient.
